starting problems on a 1990 535i

I own a 1990 535i. I cannot get it to start. We've replaced the spark plugs. Check coil and distributor cap. Husband doesn't think the starter is bad. After you turn the ignition over it just tries to start but doesn't turn over. Then you hear a ping. Can't figure out what it could be. Help!!!!

Have you checked each coil for spark? It could also be the crank position sensor.
